“The Promise: A Lesson in White Privilege” a story from Longing: Stories of Racial Healing
This is a story about my ongoing journey to recognize and root out my racial conditioning as a White person. I tell about my interaction with an African American woman, the comment I made that caused her pain, and what happened when I tried to repair the injury.
Three years after Longing was published, we got an email from Susan O’Halloran, a professional storyteller, inviting me and my husband to contribute to her JustStories Online Storytelling Festival. The recording was subsequently placed on the RaceBridgesVideos.com website and promoted on the JustStories Youtube channel. By the time that channel was deactivated, “The Promise” had close to a million views. It is now housed on my YouTube channel and is still being used in schools and discussion groups around the world
